About Me
Athal Melchior Vervliet
Singer - Vocal Coach - Composer
I am driven by two questions:
1) How does everything fit together?
2) How can I help you?
I grew up in an artistic family (professional singers/ performers/ coaches /sounddesigners /artists).
At the age of 6, I was introduced to classical music and baroque as a choirboy. Even then, I was an observant witness to how my mother and aunts vocally trained many generations of performers using a wide variety of methodologies. This family craft environment, and the resulting professional contacts and private training (voice, piano, guitar, bagpipes, musical, jazz, dance, theatre...), formed the ground of my development. Having trained in music production, I feel at home in front of and behind the mic. In addition to this, I am taking a course in composition/film music at Berklee college of music (Boston) and am involved in projects with, among others, vzw Koudvuur (soundscapes). I radically choose my own path.
Contacts with authorities in their field are important to me, always driven by one question: What is it really like?
I met people such as Serge Wilfar, Gilles Pesnot (La Voix Guérison), Anne-Marie Blink, Jill Purce (Overtone Singing), Stephen Gilligan (Trance) Ingrid Voerman (sound-oriented), Axel Everaert, Steve Dugardin, Martine Reyners....
I delve into different methods: Sing With Freedom/Speak With Freedom/ Per Bristow Vocal Method (Per Bristow), Breatheology (Stig Severinsen), Wim Hoff Method, Ilan Lev Method (Ady Elzam), Voice Liberation, Alexander Löwen Method, CVT, Bel Canto, EVT, The Power of the Creative Mind/ The Hero's Journey/ Trance. Furthermore, I have expanded my toolbox by training in massage techniques.
I let no methodology or form distract me from what I experience as natural and genuine. My work is very varied. With great patience, sensitivity and generosity, I tailor my lessons to my students. This ensures that everyone gets unique, personalised lessons.
I performed roles in musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Sweeney Tod, Tintin, Rent, The Lion King and Into the woods. Highlights were participations in concerts conducted by Ennio Moricone, the opera project Faust (Royal Ballet of Flanders), film concerts of Lord of the Rings, Tim Burton and Danny Elfman, and Ode to Mikis Theodorakis.
With equal passion, I sing at birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, funerals, Day of Caring and enjoy providing entertainment.
I see myself as a contemporary troubadour with a mission: to spread joy, understanding and freedom as a singer and as a teacher.
I was vocal coach at the VUB-Musical and asbl Harteklop. I currently teach singing on Saturdays at Nicodemus Music School in Mechelen and during the week I am happy to receive you in Sint-Niklaas.
Working with the voice is a destination.
